Our April #dimeofthemonth is our Director of Distributor Sales, Erik Nemes! Erik is the kind of person who leads by example — regularly traveling to every distributor event he can fit in his calendar, and always in his team's corner. He believes that hard work always pays off, and his dedication to the distributors and our team is proof of that every single day. Away from work, you can find him chasing after a 1.5-year-old, playing golf or trying to perfect his lawn.
Q. What gets you out of bed every morning?
That would be my son Michael. I’ve always been an early riser, but it used to be to play golf, go to the gym, or take my dog for a walk. Since we’ve had Michael my mornings consist of him asking for a waffle, watching sesame street, and watching him play with 100 different toys for 5 seconds each. It’s a blast and something I look forward to each day
Q. What has your career path looked like?
I took an entrepreneurship class my senior year of college and at that point I had it made up in my mind that I wanted to work at start ups. Sales was the lowest barrier of entry and I was really fortunate to get hired as the first sales hire at a small company in Boston, despite having almost no sales experience. Working at an early stage start up so early in my career allowed me to be exposed to a lot of different parts of the business and I think has served me really well especially here at Cents.
Q. What advice would you give to your younger self?
I would just tell my younger self that hard work always pays off. It might not happen as quickly as you’d hope but if you focus on the right things, surround yourself with good people, and are willing to put in the work then your efforts will be rewarded.
Q. Tell us one thing people don’t know about you.
I have a twin brother. We aren’t identical but we look a lot alike. If he were to walk into the Cents office everyone would just assume it was me.
I’ll also add that my last name is pronounced “Knee-miss”. Nobody seems to know that.
Q. What makes Cents different from other places you’ve worked?
I think the accountability we all have towards each other. I love that we’re all focused on the same goal of building the best products for laundromat owners. I think that shared focus helps to hold everyone accountable without having to micromanage because we all want to accomplish the same things and nobody wants to be the weak link.
Q. What is your secret to making progress each day?
For me I just try to control what I can control. I schedule time blocks for myself for specific tasks because it’s easy to get distracted by emails, phone calls, slacks, etc and if you’re constantly thinking about all the things you have to do, you’ll never actually get anything done. That’s easier said than done, especially when a big part of my job is being available to my customers but focusing on being present helps me on a day to day basis.
Q. A typical weekend for me is…
Spending time with my family. That usually consists of house projects, trying to perfect my lawn (this is the year I finally do it), taking our dog for a walk in the woods, and keeping a 1.5 year old boy busy. My wife and I also both come from big families so we usually have some family event happening, and if we don’t, Michael’s grandparents are pretty good at guilt tripping us into making a visit.
Q. If you could switch your job with anyone else within Cents, whose job would you want?
Assuming I would also get their skillset, I’d probably say Kevin Bowman. How he’s able to tie all of our technology together and provide us data in actionable format is really impressive.
Q What advice do you have for prospective Cents candidates?
Be curious and be yourself. Cents is an amazing place to work and we are in a really unique and niche industry, but it’s certainly not for everyone. You should be interviewing us as much as we’re interviewing you to make sure you’re making the right decision for yourself and your career. We have a really high retention rate and I think that’s because we’ve fostered a culture where people are comfortable being themselves but are also in roles that fit their skill sets and their goals.
Q. Motto or personal mantra/Words to live by?
Be present. Life goes by fast so I try to enjoy living in the moment as much as I can.
